Taj Mahal mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) se bana hai, jo pure white marble ka basic chemical structure hai. 

Jab ye calcium carbonate acids ke contact me aata hai, toh chemical reaction hoti hai aur surface change hone lagta. 


Acid Rain Formation


Industries, vehicles, power plants aur refineries se nikalne wali gases — mainly SO₂ aur NOₓ — hawa mein moisture aur oxygen ke saath react karti hain. 

Is reaction se sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) aur nitric acid (HNO₃) bante hain, jo baarish ya fog ke through ground par aate hain. 

Ye acid rain normal rain se zyada acidic hoti hai aur stone, metal aur marble dono ko damage karti hai.

Mathura Oil Refinery


Mathura refinery, jo Agra se lagbhag 40 km door hai, ne 1970s–80s se hi SO₂ emissions ka major source mana gaya hai. 

Committee reports ne confirm kiya tha ki refinery aur local industries se nikalne wale pollutants Taj ke marble ke liye serious threat hain. 


Local Industries and Foundries


Agra aur uske aas-paas iron foundries, glassworks, small factories aur thermal plants bhi SO₂ aur NOₓ release karte hain. 

Ye emissions directly local air quality ko affect karte hain aur acid rain banne me contribute karte hain. 


Vehicular Pollution


Badhte hue traffic, diesel vehicles aur poor fuel quality se bhi nitrogen oxides aur particulate matter (PM) badh raha hai. 

Particulate matter, jaise soot particles, marble surface par deposit ho kar pehle se yellow hue crust ko aur dark bana dete hain.

Polluted Yamuna River aur surrounding areas se nikalne wali gases aur vapors bhi micro-environment ko affect karti hain.

1980s me environmental lawyer M.C. Mehta ne Supreme Court me petition daala, jisme Taj Mahal ke yellowing ka issue highlight kiya gaya. 

Court ne acknowledge kiya ki SO₂ aur acid rain Taj ke liye major threat hain. 


Court Orders and Taj Trapezium Zone


Supreme Court ne 1996 me strict orders diye:

- Agra ke aas-paas Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) declare kiya gaya. 

- TTZ me industries ko low-sulfur fuel use karne, emissions control karne ya shift hone ka order diya gaya. 

- Vehicles ko cleaner fuel (CNG, low-sulfur diesel) use karne ke guidelines diye gaye. 


Cleaning and Restoration Efforts


Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) ne:

- Periodic mud-pack cleaning (multani mitti) karke surface se grime hataya. 

- Marble ko gently wash karke aur chemical treatments se protect karne ki koshish ki. 

Lekin jab tak pollution source control na ho, cleaning temporary solution hi rehti hai. 


Why This Is a Bigger Problem


Not Just Taj Mahal


Taj Mahal ek high-profile example hai, lekin same process Red Fort, Agra Fort aur dusre heritage monuments ko bhi affect kar raha hai. 

High levels of PM aur NOₓ se sandstone par black crusts ban rahe hain, jo unki original color aur structure ko damage kar rahe hain. 


Heritage vs Development Conflict


Ye case clearly dikhata hai ki industrial growth aur heritage conservation ke beech balance banana kitna zaroori hai. 

Agar pollution control weak rahega, toh sirf monuments nahi, public health bhi risk me rahegi.

- TTZ rules ko strictly implement karna aur regular monitoring karna.

- Tourists aur locals ko ye samjhana ki pollution sirf “hawa kharab” nahi, balki national heritage ko khatam kar raha hai. 

- Schools, colleges aur media ke through awareness campaigns chalana.

Taj Mahal ka peela padna koi accident nahi, balki decades se chal raha hua scientifically documented process hai.
